A/C Repair Spartanburg, SC

It never fails! It get to the point in the Summer when the temperature outside is in the 90's or over 100, you're in the cool house and you notice that it doesn't feel as as cool as it should. You know that it's gonna go down when you need it the most. But do you need to call in an AC repair service? Possibly, but first, there are a few things you should check that may be easily fixed and save you from unneeded repair expenses!

Do you feel air flowing from the vents?

One of the easiest things to do in order to maintain a well functioning air conditioning unit, is to replace the the air filter every 90 days. This is also one of the most neglected things most homeowners have on their maintenance checklist. A filter that is clogged will prevent air flowing through the vents and could actually cause additional issues with your system. If you have pets, you may want to change it more often as pet hair will be collected by the filter.

If you have checked the filter and still have no air flow, you need to inspect the unit, this is generally outside on the side of the house or behind it. Here are some things you want to look for:
  • Leaves or other debris around the coils
  • Bushes, trees or overgrowth around the unit that may be blocking air flow. You want at least 2 feet around the unit.
  • Look at the coils and inspect them for for soil buildup. If they are clogged with soil, it is recommended that you have them professionally cleaned. You can damage the fins very easily and cause permanent obstructions to air flow and ultimately burn the unit up because it can't breath.
  • With the unit off, look down around the copper tubing for ice buildup on the pipes. There are a few reasons for this to occur.
  1. If the filter was clogged, it could cause the unit to run constantly in an attempt to reach the temperature that the thermostat is set on. When it is unable to kick on and off, it will freeze up. Another reason for freezing up is setting the thermostat too low. The ideal setting is 70 degrees, but no lower than 68. If you set it any lower you are almost guaranteeing a freeze up.
  2. Another cause for freezing up is low freon due to a leak in the system. If everything so far is ok, this is the point where you would call Spartanburg HVAC Services.
  • One other thing that could be the cause of low or no air flow is clogged vents or clogged coils in the air handler if you have one. Again, this would be a job for a professional and Spartanburg HVAC Services would love to take care of that for you!
